BDP’s work has helped secure £420 million of funding to relocate patient care facilities from outdated accommodation into new purpose-designed spaces appropriate for 21st century healthcare. This included provision of a level one trauma facility and helipad in a constrained residential area.
The proposal will be visible from a number of surrounding conservation areas, including Kemp Town which comprises the only Grade I listed Regency terrace with a coastal setting. The site itself contains two listed buildings which will be demolished and rebuilt as part of the proposals.
Throughout the process BDP was involved in detailed negotiations with the local planning authority and English Heritage, in relation to design and heritage issues. BDP also led extensive negotiations with the local authority on the complex Section 106 Agreement and planning conditions.
In close liaison with the Hospital Trust, BDP devised a consultation strategy which included regular meetings with local residents living within a quarter mile of the site. In addition, there were two large public exhibitions, where it is estimated 4,000 people saw the proposals.
The planning application, labelled by officers as “Brighton’s most complex application,” received a unanimous decision to grant consent from Brighton and Hove’s planning committee in 2012.
