Case Studies
Almost 22 million people live in its urban area, predicted to reach 31.2 million by 2035. However, despite its issues with poverty and overpopulation, Dhaka remains the largest and most powerful economy in Bangladesh, contributing 40% of the country’s GDP.
Rail infrastructure
To help solve the city’s severe traffic congestion and pollution issues, a new metro rail system is being built, the Dhaka Metro Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) which will consist of a total of five lines – 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6.
Detailed design, tender assistance and supervision of construction work for the Line 5 Northern Route is being undertaken by a consortium led by Nippon Koei. The route will be 20km long, extending from Hemayetpur to Vatara and will include a 13.5km underground stretch to cover high-density areas from Gabtoli to Notun Bazar.
Underground station design
BDP will be designing nine underground stations on the line, which will cross the heart of the city from west to east. We have developed a design that combines specific solutions unique to each neighbourhood with standard coherent unifying elements along the entire Metro line.
Dhaka’s new infrastructure, including the emerging metro network, looks towards the bright future of the country and its people, and our design concepts respect the traditional values and distinct characteristics of Dhakaite culture, supporting the localism and micro-business networks that contribute positively to the life and animation of the city.
