Landscape and biodiversity

We are knowledgeable in the enhancement of both public and environmental health and wellbeing and the ways in which creating accessible green spaces in our towns and cities can positively support health whilst also protecting against the impact of climate change.

Expertise

Beckenham Place Park, London, UK

Across Nippon Koei, technology innovation is supported by our central research institute, which is responsible for R&D for core technologies relating to civil engineering, architecture, environment and social science. It is of utmost importance to us that we are able to meet the sophisticated and complex needs of cities both now and in the future.

How we can help

1. City and streets

Our masterplan for Brompton in Canada is an example of how we are transforming a 21-hectare existing shopping centre site into a sustainable, transit-oriented community with a network of open spaces.

Our ethos is to design walkable neighbourhoods that enhance communities, support economic development, and always feel safe.

2. Parks, gardens and green infrastructure

The conceptualisation, design and delivery of parks and gardens can improve health and well-being whilst providing the lungs to our cities by supporting biodiversity, cleaning air, absorbing water, and cooling city temperatures.  Our reinstatement of the historic lake and parklands at Beckenham Place Park, London, is an example of how we enhanced the nature reserve and reconnected the park with its local community.

3. Rivers and water

We bring expertise in the assessment of flood risk, the development of mitigation strategies and the design of drainage systems, rivers and waterfronts. We are able to utilise this knowledge to address environmental challenges, including flood alleviation and pollution whilst helping to bring city life back to waterfronts such as Jakarta River in Indonesia to support economic, social and ecological city strategies.

4. Biodiversity

We are knowledgeable in environmental challenges and the ways in which biodiversity is under threat from climate change, habitat loss, invasive species and human activity. We have expertise in both the assessment of biodiversity and the design and implementation of measures to restore ecosystems, create habitats and promote biodiversity.

5. Welcoming and inclusive places

We are skilled in the conceptualisation, planning, design development and implementation of inspiring, healthy, welcoming external spaces that are inclusive to all and enrich the natural environment.

Case studies

West Gorton community park

Manchester, UK

Our landscape architects, working with engineering and design consultancy, Arup, designed a new sustainable drainage park for the local community, using an interconnected series of swales, rain gardens and bio-attenuation features.

River Regeneration Report

Patimban, Indonesia

There is much discussion around the benefits of green infrastructure and how it can stimulate a holistic approach to sustainable design.
