Case Studies
The masterplan delivers exceptional facilities and an estate that enables and encourages a new way of learning, researching, and working. The campus will be consolidated with new builds planned alongside refurbishment and redevelopment of existing buildings, creating flexibility and variety to accommodate different student needs.
Gateway campus to the city and industry
Sheffield Business School acts as a gateway to the city campus and the city of Sheffield. It has been designed to promote civic and industrial engagement by providing a heart in which community, business, and student are encouraged to mingle. One of the key ways in which this development acts as a collaborative campus gateway is through the innovative ‘Knowledge Exchange’. The Knowledge Exchange is an open and accessible ground floor which unites staff, students, visitors, and businesses in a new destination for both the university and the city.
Social value
Underpinning the development of this project has been a robust scheme of social value engagements by each of the members of the ‘Hallam Alliance’: BDP, Arup, BAM, and CRBE. The Alliance is an innovative delivery model that brings together locally based, but global reaching, field leaders to revolutionise the design and creation of major projects in a system that encourages collaboration – not only between contractors in the Alliance but between the local community too.
Sustainability goals and achievements
In response to the climate emergency, Sheffield Hallam released a comprehensive carbon brief for all buildings coming out of the masterplan. As health and wellbeing affect the productivity and general happiness of staff and students, BDP made sustainability an integral part of our design from an early stage.
A bespoke holistic Sustainability Tracker has been developed for the new buildings, and adopts inputs from a range of recognised standards including BREEAM and WELL, alongside considerations and targets set by SHU such as:
- Net Zero Carbon Ready buildings
- BREEAM and WELL bespoke criteria
- EPC A rated envelope
- Net biodiversity gain
The tracker has also been tailored to consider local social and geographical considerations including the zero carbon by 2030 target set by Sheffield City Council. BDP’s use of the tracker allows for continuous monitoring of the various targets set out throughout the design stages to ensure they remain at the forefront of our design strategies.
